Southwestern Scholarships to Member Families

Southwestern Electric awarded 21 scholarships in 2009

For the fifteenth year, Southwestern Electric Cooperative is doing its part to help co-op members achieve the dream of obtaining a higher education. Southwestern Electric’s 2009 Scholarship Program will award scholarships, which can be used toward post-secondary studies, to 21 students from member families. Southwestern Electric Cooperative has awarded 286 scholarships, amounting to more than $143,000, since the program’s inception in 1995.

“The scholarship program is just one way Southwestern Electric Cooperative demonstrates its commitment to the region it serves and the people who live here,” says Ann Schwarm, who chairs the Scholarship Committee. “The young people are our future and we want to encourage them to continue to learn and grow.”

Separate scholarships are available for high school seniors graduating in 2009 and high school graduates from previous years who have already begun their collegiate work. Students can use the $500 scholarships to offset tuition costs at any accredited university, college, or vocational school.

“We want all students to know, even if you applied previously as a graduating high school senior and did not receive a scholarship, you’re welcome and encouraged to apply this year for the post-high school scholarship,” adds Schwarm.

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria listed below. They must also complete Southwestern Electric’s scholarship application and provide all required supplemental materials, including transcripts, attendance records and financial information.
