Water Heater Credits
Bill credit for new water heaters means member savings

In the market for a water heater? Southwestern Electric offers a bill credit to members who go electric! The credit applies to both new construction and to homes where water heating is being converted from gas to electric.

The bill credit will equal the cost of the water heater, not to exceed a predetermined amount. “The credit for converting from gas to electric will be different from the credit we offer to a member building a new home,” said John Winter, Southwestern’s director of residential programs and technical services.

The water heater must meet specifications outlined by the cooperative and be used for domestic water heating. “We ask that you contact us with the specifications of the water heater you intend to buy so we can determine the amount of your credit,” Winter said.

Before issuing a credit, the co-op requires proof of purchase and permission to inspect the installation (to confirm that it meets National Electrical Safety Code requirements).

Southwestern’s water heater program also includes a credit provision for water heaters used in radiant heating applications. “We will allow more than one water heater bill credit for a single meter point for such applications,” he said.

The program applies to single family homes; modular, manufactured or custom homes used as a permanent residence; multi-family homes (limited to a four-plex); small commercial single tenant office buildings; and residential or small commercial radiant floor applications. Other applications may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

“The electric water heater needs to be of sufficient capacity to meet the water heating requirements of the location it serves. It also has to meet current GAMA standards, and it should have a minimum 3,000-watt element,” he said.
